Space and the future of healthcare


The process of developing space microorganisms begins by taking the microorganisms on a recoverable spacecraft into space.


There, due to the extraordinary conditions found in space – microgravity, intense radiation, a low - intensity magnetic field and extreme temperatures among them – the microorganisms mutate and acquire remarkable performance-enhancing properties.


Back on earth, selected strains are cultivated within our laboratories in China, where world-leading research is investigating how the microorganisms have changed and the potential benefits of their mutation.


The process is as follows:

— the microorganisms are taken into space on a recoverable spacecraft

— in space, the genes of strains or cells are endogenously mutated, causing their growth, heredity and metabolism to change, achieving a high-frequency mutagenic effect that is not produced on Earth

— in our laboratories, the microorganisms are cultivated to obtain engineered strains or cells that may have high-performance properties.

Testing of these characteristics is in the early stages. But already we're finding that microorganisms can accelerate fermentation and improve quality compared to earth-bound microorganisms.


In the US, tests of the 'space' Humicola Fuscoatra trichothecin indicate its yield is 1.9 times that of the earth-bound control strains.


The plicacetin antibiotic, after being carried to the space, has a yield 1.2 times that of the control strains.


In China, the content of statin in space monascus has been raised 7.8 times that of the ground control strains. The Lysobacter Enzymogenes of the secretory lysyl endopeptidase has its yield increase by up to 40.2%, with fermentation reduced by 48 hours.


By selecting the mutated microbial strains, we obtain those most likely to produce more bioactive ingredients and have a shorter fermentation period.


These changes reduce the cost of developing medicines such as antibiotics. They improve the technique, quality and purity; reduce energy consumption; and so contribute to the health and wellbeing of people around the world.
